A routine dental cleaning at Eastern Slope Dental helps to ensure that your teeth and gums are in their best possible condition. Before starting your dental cleaning, one of Dr. Mulandi’s hygienists will use a small mirror to inspect your mouth. She then uses an instrument called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from between your teeth and around your gum line. Tartar, which consists of hard deposits of bacteria on the teeth, requires a professional dentist or hygienist to remove.
Brushing and Polishing Your Teeth
Once our hygienist is satisfied that she has removed all tooth tartar, the next step is to use a high-powered electric toothbrush to clean them. The taste and feel of the toothpaste is similar to what you’re accustomed to at home, but it’s of a stronger quality. The toothpaste has a gritty sensation that allows your dental hygienist to scrub your teeth at a deeper level than you can with typical toothpaste at home.
She will, following the cleaning, professionally polish your teeth. Just maintain your regular home care regimen and a bi-annual professional polishing should be adequate for most people.
Flossing and Fluoride Treatment
Our hygienist also flosses your teeth and makes note of any problems such as bleeding gums. Before Dr. Mulandi comes in to inspect your mouth, your hygienist applies a fluoride treatment that remains on your teeth for approximately one minute. You can choose from one of several flavors. Your dental hygienist places a mouthpiece containing foam gel onto your teeth so they receive the full benefit of fluoride.
We recommend that patients come in twice a year for a dental cleaning and to receive X-rays once a year. Depending on what we see on the X-ray, you may want to schedule another appointment for follow-up work. If everything looks fine, we’ll look forward to seeing you in about six months.
